God Is In the Process

Most of us know the story of Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22.

God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac—the very son He had promised. Abraham obeys. He gets up early, gathers the supplies, climbs the mountain, and prepares the altar, but just as he’s about to go through with it, God intervenes.

“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”
Genesis 22:12 (NIV)

If you zoom out, you realize something important: this was never about the sacrifice. It was always about the process—about the trust, the obedience, the relationship, and that changes everything for those of us who create.

The Creative Process Is Sacred

We’re often so obsessed with finishing the thing—getting the book published, the painting framed, the song released—that we forget how much of God’s work happens in the in-between. We want the masterpiece. God wants to shape us.

The process is where you wrestle. Where you listen. Where you doubt and keep going. Where you invite God into your mess instead of just presenting Him with your polished product.

Just like Abraham walking up the mountain, carrying the weight of confusion and trust at the same time, your creative process becomes a place where faith is formed.

God Doesn’t Just Want What You Make—He Wants to Make Something in You

Think about that for a second.

What if God isn’t standing at the finish line, waiting for you to impress Him with your final draft? What if He’s right beside you, whispering ideas, giving peace when you’re stuck, nudging you to try again, and using each step to grow your trust? He’s not just interested in what’s on the canvas. He’s interested in who you’re becoming as you create it.

When the Work Feels Wasted

Sometimes we feel like we’ve poured ourselves into something, and it goes nowhere. No likes. No shares. No applause. Maybe not even finished. But Abraham’s act of obedience wasn’t wasted—even though the sacrifice never happened. Why? Because the point wasn’t the outcome. The point was the partnership…the obedience…the withholding nothing back from God.

God isn’t just looking for what you can produce. He’s looking for a heart that says, “Even if this never becomes what I hope it could… Even if it hurts…I trust You in the process.”

3 Truths to Carry With You as You Create:

  1. You’re not just making something—God is making something in you.
Every step of your process is a place for spiritual formation.

  2. God partners with you, not just through you.
    You’re not a tool in God’s hands; you’re a co-creator invited into divine collaboration.

  3. The process is where purpose is refined.
Sometimes the detours, delays, and doubts do more to develop your calling than the completion itself.
